Review of book on Dementia

July 31st, 2010

Cindy Keith is a Certified Dementia Nurse and has written a helpful book about communication and skills relating to the care and service of individuals living with dementia. The best part of the book “Love Laughter & Mayhem” is the personal feeling of direct experience Cindy relates and the powerful stories that unfold, allowing the reader to experience first-hand accounts of many situations that actually happened. I felt closer to the people she describes in her travels and career and that makes this book a worthwhile read for healthcare workers, CNAs, Nurses, Doctors, Assisted Living Managers and other professional communicators. I found this book for sale at www.booklocker.com which is an online bookstore. Cindy also has a special place in her heart for the caregiver who is willing to open their hearts as well as their minds to better communication.

Music and Memories and Meatballs

July 5th, 2010

Growing up with an “everything from scratch” Italian heritage, my Great,Great Aunt Nuna would roll fresh ravioli filling through the grinder and roll out the dough, cut it and spoon the filling and take a fork and seal the edges. Cooked to perfection, and don’t get me started about the sauce. The music that played in the background was The Beatles, of course, this was the 60’s era and my college cousins were up on things. The meatballs were a work of art and nothing can and will ever compare to those Sundays at Uncle Vinnie and Aunt Violet’s for dinner. The experience is a combination of many sensations and the fact is that we have the opportunity every morning, afternoon and evening to make the most of “family-style” memories using music, caring and well-presented food. Conversations about the “old-times” are the result of the people that orchestrated “the old-times”. Today will be “the old-times” tomorrow. Put some thought into the way you are approaching the value of meal preparation and presentation, keep it interesting and interject humor whenever possible. For instance, tonight we had hot-dogs and beans and I claimed that I am following a recipe by either Jesse James or Buffalo Bill Cody and everyone laughed. While cooking I sang “Home, Home On The Range” and that got the next laugh. How can we make life into an experience worth waking up to. I guess that’s a choice for everyone to make on their own each day. Who wrote the song, “I’m A Believer”? I’ll bet The Monkeys were glad that someone woke up one day and wrote that fantastic tune. Have fun today and write a new song with this day.

What’s your story ?

July 5th, 2010

In building trust and cultivating excellent communication one impressive question can open you up to another world you may want to experience, your client’s world. The question is simple and it really works, “What’s your story?”. Ask that question and you may get to know someone. You may find out what are the most important and meaningful times in another person’s life and spend valuable time with them that they may never forget. As they begin to unfold the history of their life and experiences it is important to be “all ears” and listen with the sole intent of learning what life has taught them, sharing their precious memories with your very heart. What’s your story and how does this help a manager or caregiver, how does it help an assisted living resident? Managers get to know their employees, caregivers get to know their patients, the consumer gets to talk about what’s most important to them…their story. It’s a great way to stimulate conversation and promote memory care through recalling events of the past and present. People will look forward to meeting with you the next time they see you because you have taken time to care. You have invested time in educating yourself about the aspects and realities of a fellow earthling’s live and times. Congratulations on taking the first step in planting seeds in your growing garden of friends. So the big question remains for you to answer for yourself…”What’s Your Story?”.

Alligator in assisted living home garden? A must see video ?

June 4th, 2010
assisted living garden art

Watch your step in this assisted living home garden

Horticulture just took a stride in an alligator direction here in Benson, Arizona’s Arizona Skyline Courtyard. The creative aspects are astounding and captivating.  Of course this ‘gator doesn’t eat much and is hooked up to the irrigation system for proper hydration.  Taking gardening to new levels and making a walk in the courtyard a seemingly “down under and go-green” adventure. CRIKEE. Steve Irwin would be proud. Chances are the garden in his back will be Arizona friendly and keep our alligator happy for the duration of his stay.  The comments are hilarious from visitors when they find out we have an alligator in our garden. The main point is to keep our environment “conversational” and “funny social” as we find everyone can interact over creative objects in the courtyard garden. Have any conversation pieces in your garden ? Why not send us some G-rated creations or plans or designs you may have dreamed up to improve/inspire  the lives of young and old alike. We are always looking for ways to get the most out of every day. Ask yourself a question like this “when was the last time I created something that no one has ever seen before ? You may be in the workshop shortly after reading this blog and I hope you do share with us here at  www.azskylinealh.com .

Follow the red brick road or “How did Dorothy get so much energy?”

June 3rd, 2010

As I see our aging population walk the red brick road “Betty’s Path” at Arizona Skyline Assisted Living home in Benson, Arizona; I think about the famous book “The Wonderful Wizard Of OZ” by L. Frank Baum and draw some amazing, life sustaining points I wish to share with you.  What is involved in the process of walking is the same process as writing. Instead of steps to walk you use one word at a time to write. Chances are, you have a purpose in mind as you decide to walk and when writing you may also choose a purpose or decide or write “on purpose”. L. Frank Baum lead his characters down the “yellow brick road” and in that process each discovered about themselves what they needed to equip themselves to face life in the best “state of being” possible. Their destination or purpose of seeing the Wizard of OZ was their main plan and it was on that yellow brick road they gained all they needed through the circumstances they encountered there. Just as the seniors motivate themselves to go outside and walk/wheelchair the “red brick road” and get the renewal of energy and “me-time” they so deserve after spending so much time sharing the assisted living lifestyle with their fellow residents. Some have set bigger and bigger goals and some are satisfied with just walking/wheeling  for no particular reason as well.  Our staff has noticed excellent results in health and attitudes and happiness. Elderly housing and nursing homes should be conscious of walking/wheelchair  needs and provide access to areas for those that are still able to ambulate, those that could benefit greatly from all that recreation and destinations can offer. Ask yourself this question, “How can I get more energy and create the best me possible ?”. The answer may be that you may be “off to see the Wizard, tomorrow morning after reading this. By the way L. Frank Baum wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a plethora of other works (55 novels in total (plus four “lost” novels), 82 short stories, over 200 poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings) per Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Frank_Baum#Political_imagery_in_The_Wizard_of_Oz

Why is everyone so happy all the time ?

June 3rd, 2010

The name of this article is also the answer to the following question about how to best operate your brain for maximum joy. What can of question can I ask my staff and people I serve to elicit a positive response? Well, based on many decades of research and findings on the human brain, asking a question to the brain casuses it to find an answer, much like a computer. Better yet, a computer is programmed to find an answer to complete the program that was written into it. Similarly, our brains are wired and programmed throughout our lives to answer questions posed to them and coupled with beliefs and cultural mores answers take shape and more questions can be posed later. Chad Helmstetter touched upon many concepts in his book “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself” http://www.amazon.com/What-Say-When-Talk-Yourself/dp/0671708821 and I learned to change what I had been saying, catching myself programming myself negatively and truly thank Chad for many great ideas. Why am I so interested in seeing people smile? You come up with a powerful question and email it to me, I enjoy new uplifting and inspirational questions and if I choose, I will pose them to my brain and the results are enriching. How can one person with an enthusiastic attitude make a difference in the happiness of others? The answer is the name of this article. Happy thinking.

The Puppy Song

Puppys are happy

When I’m 64 or 65

May 9th, 2010

I used to listen to The Beatles and the song about getting older and losing my hair always seemed so distant and well, comical to me. Then one day someone commented on waking up in the morning to find some of their hair on their pillow. He commented, “What held this in yesterday?”. Again we find some comedy intertwined within the reality of aging. I am getting gray around the sides and don’t ask the barber to take too much off the top so I can cover the thinning and I guess the loss of hair provides me a chance to laugh at myself. Hey, I still got my sense of humor and I think I will keep feeding my mind food for laughter long after I may become 65 or 105. This blog may provide food for thought and even recipes for food. This blog is designed with laughter in mind and the sound of open minds that are ready to share ideas, activities and places to go that benefit our senior living participants. Feel free to share your experiences and don’t hesitate to share struggles and victories in the services you have provided for people in assisted living home or adult living homes throughout the United States and even around the world.
